Prometheus EG Double Torque Gears - Mini Review
For those of you that know me, I'll almost swear by Laylax Prometheus parts. They, in general, are a higher quality part with less noise to them. But they come with a bit bigger pricetag.

Back in October (Oct. 12th to be exact), I bought a set of Laylax Prometheus EG Hard Double Torque Type gears from Poweredge USA. Price ran me about 105 shipped via UPS 2-Day air.
They got here shortly after on the 14th of October and I went to work.

These gears were the backbone to my SAM-R that I put a PGC Pro-Win gearbox into. Took a little bit of convincing to get them to go into the gearbox, but alas, they went in nice and smoothly once I got it just right.

ALL through the fall, winter (2006), spring, and partway through summer (2007) the gears were subject to a WIDE variety of velocities in the ProWin gearbox. After all that was one of the main selling points on the gearbox.

Finally June 23rd comes along and I go to use the gun at a game.
I noticed a weird noise when I fired the gun, a abnormal grinding sound. Nothing too out of the ordinary, just like the motor height had dropped a little.
I thought nothing of it really because of the vibrations. I didn't put any thread locker on the adjustment screw, I just left it alone with the factory original rubber "seal" that helps lock the thread.
I sat there for a good while trying to figure it out, adjusting the motor height numerous times and trying to figure out what was wrong with it, threw a little grease thinking it might have dried up a little. It still worked, but I just didn't like the sound of it.
I started to look down the lower portion of the gearbox and run the motor to get them to turn.. Just by luck I noticed a heavily greased spot on the spur gear, right where a tooth SHOULD be. I grabbed a uber small screw driver and poked at it to wipe it off a little.
There was no tooth there! lol (shocking, I know)
I thought to myself...
After eight and a half months of abuse, after all, I wanted to put them to the test along with the gearbox, they had finally broken.
After a few jams that were anger induced by people not calling hits, a couple misalignments with the upper portion of the gearbox, velocities ranging from 280 fps up to 475 fps and swapping it at a moments notice (coupled with an awesome rate of fire at 475 fps), and a probably a few other tests, ONE tooth had finally broken.

All in all, I would have to say that the gears were well worth the money. They did exactly as they should and to me, they passed a heck of a testing.
I mean, I even let Downslide use the gun a couple times... That right there goes to show you that it can stand up to some rigorous usage, lol.

Now with a set of Triple Torque gears on the way, we shall see what kind of problems we run into... just not in a "testing" phase anymore.
