Final headcount for the day was 42 players
I would like to thank everybody for coming out, it was ungodly humid, i believe the humidity index was 94% yesterday
funny, so far this year, the weather has matched the game climate for the backstory of the game
hunting Pablo - Columbia - humid
best of the worst - Vietnam - humid as all hell
a-team - mainly filmed in northern Cali - nice dry heat with a slight breeze
breakaway - Africa - humid as hell
OK, enough of that, onto the AAR
First, story crap: for those who didn't know, breakaway was based around the story of an AN-22 Russian transport plane that was shot down over the Congo, while going down, the plane dropped some of it's cargo. Due to the nature of the cargo, the Russians dispatched two spetnaz teams into the area to secure the crash site. What was unknown to everyone until about 2 hours into the game when an alive Russian pilot showed up with a case of Intel. Apparently, the guerrillas had some bad dealing with Russia, and Russia decided to get even. The crash was actually staged in order to get the two Spetnaz teams into the area as well as a nuclear device that was disassembled and dropped with the cargo. The pilot then ditched the plane to make it look like a crash and then met up with the Spetnaz teams in order to pass along the real game Intel/backstory/bomb instrutions. The new primary objective for the Spetnaz teams was now to find the bomb packages, arm them, then place the bomb inside the guerrilla camp before the timer expired.
With the late start, we got on Field at 14:00, The Russian team started off very strong, securing all bomb parts - unknown to them at the time - as well as most of the other cargo giving them control of over 75% of all props in play.
At 15:45, the Russian pilot turned up, delivered his case of Intel to the Russians, and just when the Russians started to open the bomb packages, the guerrilla team mounted an assault on the bunker the Russians were using as a cargo depot. I was right there, it was a beautiful ambush, all day the guerrilla team was using whistles to coordinate group attacks, when you heard the whistle it signaled the guerrillas to fire at once, very nice guys, i was impressed.
Luckily for the Russians, they had a medic with them who healed the 5 that where hit at the start of the attack, the guerrillas got really close, i think i saw t1337 only about 40 feet away from the base hiding behind a tree that was no bigger then my arm.
The Russians beat back the guerrillas and after a quick sweep of the area, they armed the bomb, which was cool as all hell to just watch, sucks if you weren't there and missed this.
time was about 16:10, i called a 30 mins break due to the humidity and as most players were walking back to the safezone for water and such. originally and weather permitting i wanted to run the game for a solid 5 hours, again due to the heat, this wasn't feasible.
After a quick 50 min break - it was hot OK ;) - we were back on the field and back into play at 17:15. I scaled the playing area down alot for the last hour, due to a drop off in players from both team due t the heat and gun problems. the last hour was intense, the bomb was armed, and the Russians were dead set to deliver it to the guerrilla base.
One snag...someone back in Russia decided to stow an extra instruction Manuel on the AN-22 and was found among the cargo by the guerrilla team, ut-oh, element of surprise just went right out the window. First thing the guerrillas did was to mount a full on assault on the Russian's makeshift cargo depot. They managed to capture the core case - case that held the radioactive cores - and the protective package - crate containing special protective gear used in the handling of radioactive materials i.e. gloves and goggles - both of which the guerrillas needed in order to disarm the bomb.
They missed the bomb by about 5 mins, as it went off in the opposite direction with spooky and co. down towards the river. The rest of the hour was filled with some pretty good firefights, the Russians and guerrillas were going at it pretty damn good, the Russians carrying an armed nuclear device that could potentially detonate if the timer ran out, and the guerrillas knowing full well there was an armed device in play, weren't about to let it into their base.
The bomb was transported via the river, which lead up to the tank crossing which was a straight shot into the guerrilla camp. pretty good idea, the Russians had sent a harassing force up behind their camp to keep them busy and not to suspect an assault from the river. Guerrillas didn't fall for that, the doubled back through the river, caught the Russian team literally out in the open water, and killed the bomb transport group.
At this point in the game, there was less then 10 mins left to play, if the guerrillas wanted to win, they had to disarm this thing fast. They ran the bomb case up to their base, and in 6 mins had removed all radioactive cores from the bomb.
But, i threw in a curve ball when i designed the bomb. It could be armed two ways:
1. just the primary package and cores, which only gave the bomb a 50% success rate
2. the addition of the "failsafe" package - a brick of c-4 - wired to the package, that could not be disarmed, and gave the bomb a 100% sauces rate
The Russians had armed the bomb with the failsafe package in place, since you cannot disarm the failsafe device, the guerrillas had to run the bomb out of their immediate area, across the tank crossing, to the opposite side of the creek which was a "safe" location, two brave guerrillas lost their lives doing this, and in 8 years of airsoft i have never seen a close ending to a game
the guerrillas got the case to the other side of the creek with 15 second left to play, nice job guys
again, thanks to everyone who came out, i know it was hot but i think everyone still had a good time. we only had about 12 people stay for the BBQ and we had enough food to feed 70, i ended up bring home brats and burgers, into the freezer for the zombie game they go!!
