View Full Version : UTG Mp5 Review
I will have this gun by around 5 or 6 pm tomorrow and will write a review on it tomorrow night. I hope my money was not wasted and the gun is everything people have cracked it up to be.

whats the diff. its just lower quality crap. i thought i seen enough of that from CA.
Its all you cheap people that are just killing yourselves. Oh i can get a cheap AEG, god Marui is such a rip, ill show them. All cheap people do is prove they are cheap and take the easy way out. Then they are the same people that bitch about it later.
Save your money, buy a Marui, and sit back pleased.
While I do tend to agree with Timmay, I must say I am currious about the UTG & SCR A.E.G.s.
I hope someone is able to make a less expensive quality A.E.G.
BUT I don't have very high expectations from them. I'm sure most will work OK out of the box, but for how long????
Someday China will probley get it right...But I'd bet that day has yet to come.

Timmay exactly how many different guns from how many different companies have you owned/own ? I know it's a lot but I think a few of these guys do not understand just how much guys like you tank NS and others have when you guys say "Save up and you shall be rewarded" vs. the "get it fast and cheap now, fork it out to fix it later." I was advised to save and am very happy that I did do it.
I've saved and what not for my guns, yes, the UTG is going to be a "backup" of sorts. I intend on having a longer rifle for my main gun so the UTG is going to be for like CQB. I was just as interested as Tank about the SRC and UTG guns, and I had a little bit of extra cash at the time, so I went ahead and bought one. Will I continue to buy the cheap end guns though? Hell no, I love the TM guns w/ a passion. I just simply needed a in-expensive backup weapon, so to speak.
... thought i seen enough of that from CA....
CA wasn't really a "cheap" alternative was it? Or are you talking about the their preupgraded, metal bodied guns, as being the alternative?
Anyway, yeah, UPS doesn't get here till like four and I dont' get done with work till about 5 or 6 so I'll get one up for those who are interested.

You know what the most odd part about that is?
It is supposed to be an exact marui copy. Yet I doubt it will function as well for as long as one.. I Really doubt they are a Japanese company, simply because of patents on the Gearbox. Marui would easily get wind of this and Shortly shoot them down. (Maybe not in court?)
Now, If it is a china AEG. This means 2 Things..
1. Do you see a pattern here? EXACT MARUI COPY, from China? See what i'm getting at? Perhaps China just sucks in the "quality build" area. Sure you can have 2 exact things. But depending on how you go about building them... AH! Maybe China just sucks at making Airsoft guns? Maybe they cut corners? Maybe the somehow botch reading the designs..
2. This also means Marui would have ALOT of trouble going after these guys. Its a whole different country, and alot of bootlegging, patent-design ripping, Copy-Cat items, ect ect.. come from China. The place is, unfortunatly, full of it.. So Its alot easier to get away with there..
This is all depending on the fact, that it is a Marui Replica.. Which is only what I heard, Not what I know is true..

from wut i saw from shortyusa it looked like a good gun 4 the price, u know not everyone can go spend 300+ for a nice tokyo marui
Sorry Timmay if this is the review that you hate, lol. Just a quick get it out there, so those interested in it can see what one person thought.
Alright, so upon arrival of getting home tonight from work, I quickly opened the box and took her out of the box and was quite amazed by the feal. If i had to say, it feels like a rougher plastic than on the TM guns, but it is very sturdy and solid.
While I had no time to charge up the 1050 mAh battery that came with it, I slapped on my large battery that had quite a bit of charge left in it still and loaded up the mags.
I took it out onto my porch and popped in the magazine and pulled off a few shots and was amazed by how nicely it sounded. Here i thought a cheap chinese made gun, its going to sound like a pig squealing and not even shoot, but it sounded very close to that of an acutal mauri Mp5.
So after I fired a few blank rounds, i put in the mag... again, (couldn't figure out why the hell wasn't firing until the mag fell on the grass 10ft below my porch) and pulled of the first shot where it just introduces the bb and nothing comes out. Then I crossed my fingers and pulled it again and the bb went flying out, really frickin fast too, it looked like a bb that was flying out of a freshly siliconed barrel. W/o the hopup on, it went about 70 ft and then dropped fast. So i put on the hopup, all the way accidently, and pulled off a few shots in full auto and they started to fly up due to the over-hop effects. So i played with the hopup until i could get it the bbs to fly straight. Quite to my surprise, they fly a nice distance of like 180ft before they start to fall off. They were hitting my old house that is 250ft back from the one I currently live in. (no, nobody lives there now, its just empty space) My only thought was... wow, this gun is so far worth it.
I was playing around with the gun a bit.. just holding it and what not, and like i said, it does have a great feel to it. Its not all to heavy, which is exactly what i wanted. It weighs less than five pounds and is very easy to shoulder at that weight also.
A couple of the bad things to this gun are...
-The body is, as most have said, almost entirely plastic. The only parts that arn't plastic on it are the retractable stock sliding arms (assuming you have the retractable stock on), trigger, mag release, claw mount (it does come w/ the gun), and then sling attachment points.
-The magazines that came with the gun are made of entirely plastic, they do have a little but of a "feel" if you would call it. You def. can feel that they are made of plastic, but they don't feel as if they will fall out of the gun, so its all good (in my opinion). They do honly hold approx. 150 rds of ammou though, compared to the mauri ones that hold the 240 rounds of ammo. Kind of a downside, but its good.
-The gun came w/ a free star midcap (so airsoft atlanta says) and it is slightly larger around than the magazines that came w/ the gun. What this does it it sort of splits the body a little bit when you do put the star magazines in the gun. Remedy? I have no clue, maybe someone could help me a little bit with that one. I would try superglue, but i'm not too worried about it.
Now the battery, yes, it is a mini. But, it is a mini NiMH, to my knowledge and what it says on the battery itslef, and it has 1050 mAh to it. So it will last a bit longer than your average mini battery. The gun package does come with a charger to chare this battery specifically too. But any charger w/ the mini connector would charge it to of course.
If you have questions, ask them, i'm trying to do a number of things at once here so its hard to completely concentrate on the gun itself. I will write an "after game" reivew on it after BHD to tell you if it held up or not, as well as take down the gun, veiw the guts, take some pics.. the normal.
Mainly though, I bought this gun, rather than a g18c aep because I hate pistols as backup, i'm an SMG person (no scorpions either kennedy!), so it fit my price range, perfectly. Thats the only reason why I bought it, for backup an for CQB. I am getting rid of my g36c hopefully and then getting a armalite variant in its place (i miss my old M15a4 rifle) so I needed something for backup and CQB.
I'll edit this post as I think of more things to say, but all in all, so far just an "out of the box" test of it, it seems really nice, and I'll keep it.
RTO-
Just as F.Y.I. Marui MP5 hi-caps hold 200 not 240. Now the Marui double shorty hi-cap mag holds 240 but the regular hi-cap is 200.
Yeah, forgot to mention the double shorty in there. Thanks for the correction tank.
I now have recently tested out how much ammo capacity each magazine holds, and the conclusion is...
The UTG Dual Shorty Hi-Cap Mags hold 250 rounds. Each of the two comfortably fit the 250 rds. Yeah, it took a little bit, but the mags do hold 250 rounds and still rattle around inside (compared to when I load up my G36c Mags and they dont' rattle because they are so packed full).
The gun is so far a good deal. Only god knows what will happen once I get it out and use it tomorrow at BHD. Good luck to all, and I will have a deacent field review of the gun after tomorrow.
Alright, so as I'm in the process of putting back together the gear box (I don't know whats going on, but something isn't aligning right and I dont' want to take the chance shutting it on something) I've got a little bit more to post on it.
YESTERDAYS GAME REPORT
-As some who asked me about the gun yesterday all know... I lost the use of semi auto on the gun. I do not know what happened, but it just everytime I put it into semi auto it either (a) did not fire, acting like it was in safe... or (b) it fired in full auto. Not to good for those precise one shot kills that one needs to take sometimes.
-As far as range, speed, and accuracy goes, Overkill was there with me as I was adjusting hopup and can verify that it does shoot just about as far as a TM gun.
As far as speed, when it chronoed yesterday it was shooting at about 250 fps (248 fps was what the chrono said). This is being compared to my upgraded G36c, minus spring upgrade, that was shooting at no higher than 238fps. So my Mp5 had roughly 10 more feet per second on my G36c.
***This is what the chrono said. Some had troubles with the chrono and it might not be completly accurate.***
In reguards to accuracy, I was able to pull off quite a few shots that were nice kills at yesterdays somalian defeat, lol. The bbs when in semi auto (when it did work) were for the most part accurate. When in full auto, the gun acted just like my G36c does and it kind of sprays them around a general area. The barrel in the gun seems just like that of a stock Mauri, maybe a little bit lesser quality, but I will try out a precision barrel on the gun and see if it does both fit, and increase accuracy, at all. The barrel itself was not cleaned before the game, I had it right out of the box with maybe 100 rds through the gun right before game start, and that was it. This may have effected accuracy a litlte.
INTERNALS
As for taking down the gun, it was quite easy to do. Once I got inside the gun itself, it was pretty much the same as my old TM Mp5a5. Not really all to difficult to take the screws out, just time consuming (once again, compared to my G36c) to do so. The gearbox itself looks identical to a TM Version 2 gearbox. The parts inside, with the exception of some being a white color, are the same as a mauri gun, just a differet name of course.
-The gears, to me at least, seem a little bit more "solid" than stock TM gears. They seem more like that of Classic Army gears. They have, of course, the plastic bushings(bearings) and they are shimmed already. But the shims feel and look very weak, like you could bend them in half just by touching them.
-The piston is, if i recall correctly from a review I read, similar to that of a stock CA piston. I find this little piece of information false. It is more similar to that of a stock TM pistion, with the exception of the stock spring does not "secure" into place in the piston. The two are sepearable without the removal of any screws or the piston head. The piston head itself is almost identical to a stock TM piston head.
http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/6326/s40200283cr.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
-Moving onto the cylinder, it is similar of a stock TM gun also. The cylinder head is the whitish color and it feels weak though. The cylinder setup is one of the first things that I feel I will be upgrading due to it fealing weak.
http://img343.imageshack.us/img343/6987/s40200299xo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
-The tappet plate and air seal nozzle are the same as a standard TM gun.
-The electrical system inside the gear box is a little bit weaker I think, than that of a TM gun. It seems made of a "cheaper quality" plastic. It doesn't feel as sturdy as a TM. A peice of it was cracked when I opened it, from what looks to be like to much tighenting of a screw.

More to come once I get gun back together.

I do agree that TM is the best of the best, but UTG Mp5s are clones of Maruis from the outside, and damn near close internals. The reliability of UTG may be a bit less, but for the price of 1 Tokyo Marui MP5 A5, battery, charger, and 2 hi caps, you can buy 3 UTG Mp5s, all of which come with the 2 hi caps, a star mag, a battery, and a charger.
Go ahead and be cheap. Get 3 of those dumb UTG guns. OR get a TM mp5 that will work for MUCH longer.

Because you know how long UTG Mp5s will last...the gun hasnt been out nearly long enough. But if you guys still wanna get a stock TM Mp5 for $195 + S&H w/o batteries, and chargers, and hi caps, when you can get a UTG for half the price, noone is stopping you.

well unless he just sat there with his finger on full auto to over heat the gun to put that crack in the picture i have a feeling it is not going to last that long compared to a marui....
well rto did you hold down that trigger for a long time? or did you use it like most people do short bursts? that could be a small sign of it is only going to last a short time...

He clearly said the crack was due to overtightening of the screw, which easily could never become a problem (besides a very slight cosmetic one), and is probably in a very limited number of UTG's guns, if not just his own.
****most likely i will edit this post if i can to add further information****
alright, enough with the dumb posts about how the gun is new and Mauri's are better. post that s**t somewhere else. this is a review to inform people and thats all that it will be. I don't care how much of Mauri fan you are. I am open and willing to try new things and with that said, i bought one. no big freakin deal. drop the crap about it being a new gun and a POS, and put it somewhere else. this is a review, and unless you hold the gun in your hands and have something CONSTRUCTIVE to say about it, I, and most likely nobody else will want to hear it in this REVIEW.
listen people. i'm posting this here for people who are new and are looking to start off and get a feel for airsoft w/o spending hundreds of dollars! as i stated before, i bought this gun for the use of a sidearm (of sorts) and the only reasons that was my primary weapon at BHD was because (a) i was trying it out so that i could inform the general airsoft public on the board here about the gun, and (b) i am selling my g36c and i did not want to use it at all for fear that "murphy's law" might have come into play.
as far as the crack.
NO NEMESIS, I rarely fired more than a two second burst at a time and seeing as to how i went through only about 1200 rounds the entire game (if not less) i did not lay down on full auto.
-if you also direct your attention as to where that crack is, there is no way that excessive full auto would do that crack to that area of the ELECTRICAL SYSTEM! the part that is cracked is secured down by another screw and even if i took out the one where it was cracked, the electrical system still would not budge. the crack was most likely done at the factory because the screw was extremely tight when i first tried to unscrew it. drop the screw crap please.

Thank you gruzniak, well said!

Vanac, there still is no validity to any truth of what you say. These guns could very well last just as long as a Mauri, or outlast them. You do not know.
Alright, so after finally getting the gun back together, I will say that I am in love with it. The two series guns that I fell in love with (after playing/feeling almost every gun that Mauri makes, as well as CA) are the armalites and the mp5 series guns. I have one, and I'm currently pursuing getting the other.
Another thing that I would like to add is how light this gun is. I bought it just for this reason! I needed a backup gun and as I have said, I think like three times so far in this thread that I don't really care to much for pistols. The UTG Mp5 is light and I did have one chance to use it as a pistol at BHD. It worked just as well as a pistol as what it did being a "rifle" of sorts.
All around, I'm going to do what everyone does with theiir airsoft guns that they want to last a while, and I"m going to put some upgrades in the gun to prolong the life of the gun. I have done it with my G36c and I will do it with every gun that I get, no matter what it is.
So, with all this said, let the floor be open to any questions that anyone may have about the gun. No question is stuipd, AS LONG AS IT PERTAINS TO THIS GUN! Fell free to also PM me with questions about it if you would like.
Personally, I would like to know how the gun performs over time with out any upgraded parts. Thus far, you have stated that the gun has worked comparably (sp?) to a stock TM, so it would be nice to have a long running comparison. Not really neccesary to post after each game unless something of note happens with it, but post every few months. Also, I'd keep track of the number of bb's that pass through it. Any "beatings" the gun may take. (i.e. dropped, banged against a tree)
Who knows, the gun may be a good chinese knock off, it may be crap, or it may be a cheap alternative to a TM for those who don't care if it holds together for a few years.
Just my opinion.

hey, you know what, I think I'll do it. I don't really need any "power" upgrades to it since it is a "backup" of sorts, so I'll take your advice and put it to use. I don't have a TM Mp5a4 that i can run along side of it, but I will keep it stock and keep track of bbs that go through it as well as beatings it might take.
Like you said Maple, it just might be a "good chinese knock off." We don't know.
No need to run a TM alongside, as there have been plenty of reviews and first hand accounts of TM guns over the years.

I agree with Maple, run it as long as you can stock. I have an MP5A5 that I still use, from 1991. I keep track of the BB's ran through to this day. So far, it is at right around 128k rounds through it. Anyone who has seen me on the field can atest to the use of this gun. It is a squad support weapon with the Cmag on it. I go through about 2.5 Cmags avg. per game. At 2700 rds per Cmag. Do the math.
So far the items replaced were....
2000- a new sector gear. Old one blew up after 9 yrs of use. I got it in 1994 though. But it was stock.
2002- spring and bushings just for more power.
2003- new tightbore brass barrel for accuracy
2003- barrel sucked, so stock went back in.. and still using stock barrel today.
2003- Added an ICS metal body, metal front, and metal SD Silencer kit. For cosmetics. I swap it out for a different look once in a while.
2004- New piston and piston head. Wanted to upgrade for better seal, and piston teeth were getting worn.
2005- put in stock spring for CQB
2005- put upgraded spring back in for outdoor games.
Add-ons.. Light grip, C-mag, and 2 hi-caps with a clamp. One is the same one I got in 1994 and it still works. Thats it.
(I have other stuff for other guns, but this is stuff for my first AEG and the one I will never get rid of because of what it is and how long I had it)
After all this time, I think I finally need a hop-up and a new spring. But for the age of this gun.. it has performed ABOVE what it should have. I think they just made them better back then. Heck, I still have the OLD School box it came in... "NEW, now with Hop-Up!" lol
Anyway, documentation like this is pretty good knowledge to have and will be useful to see exactly how long it will last and make it price copmparable to the TM guns. It may be cheaper and moight not last as long... but at that price, how long WILL it last. Might still be worth it to someone on a tighter budget than most. Things to consider.
Another thing to consider, is that it may turn out like some ICS & CA guns. The TM upgraded parts don't work well with all of them. It is pretty much hit and miss. Some work great, others break tapet plates on a consistant basis for no reason once you replaced the stock one the first time. Maybe the gearbox is not molded correctly, shimmed wrong, etc. You never know. But it just seems like when you get one of these and have to replace something that first time, it will keep on breaking after that. It is pretty much a prop or boat anchor then. So that will be interesting to get info on as well. It may take about 10 different guns to see if the parts fit correctly every time.
Personally, I will keep watching for reviews on this gun. Sometimes we buy guns just to screw with and we never use them for games. It may be something good for the "plinker" that doesn't play as many games as the more dedicated airsofter does.
So keep us posted bud, we gotta know the dirt!
Show us some pics of the outside for comparison!
Well said N.S.
RTO-
From the pics you posted the internals look identical to Cybergun's, (a.k.a. Soft Air) and very close to ICS'. That wierd translucent-ish white platic is completely differant material than TM uses.
Anyway, it should be interesting to see how that thing holds up.

also i agree with maple i would rather see how the gun performs over time.... i will honestly say myself i am a true tm fan however if this gun will perform like a marui in a year maybe i will pick on up for new people to play with when they go out there with me

yes, i read that post.....however, there was no specification of the utg guns, it was only of the ics/ca guns. i simply wanted to know if i could upgrade it internally and externally, as this will be a leading factor in my possible purchase of one........i beleive that NS was also talking about the UTG guns, but again there was no clarifaction
NS...this is not my way of "flaming" you, simply trying to find an answear to a question as i am rather "new" to the AEG side of the sport, i have only had springers and LPEG's up until my AK, and soon to be Spets, and MP5
Yes, the UTG seems like it is albe to accept the same upgrades as TM guns and all stuff is interchangeable. Bot internally and cosmetically.
After analysis and a lot of thinking and taking down the gun again, i think part of the semi auto problem may have been due to the selector plate. It seems to bubble up in the middle (kinda a hump shape against the gun) and it doesn't seem to touch one/both metal prongs like it should. Also, the selector switch is very touchy, this may also be due to the selector plate.
Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but thats what it seems like.
Any other questions?

"Another thing to consider, is that it may turn out like some ICS & CA guns."
I said IT..... This is a thread about the UTG gun,.. not an M60 or a Glock handgun. So I am talking about "IT" being a UTG that it may turn out to be like the other guns that are knock-offs.
As far as upgrading -
Just because a gun is a knock-off, doesn't mean it will accept the upgrade parts. They might fit, but they may not work long term. That is something you may have to determine over a period of time with more than one gun.
CA and ICS are like this. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. Without having more than one gun or ever having upgraded it beyong staring at the gearbox and saying "YES, it will work". Yes RTO said it seems like it will. This will be good to know once he gets to that point.
We are all interested in learning this as well as how the gun performs long term STOCK.
Yeah be sure to make an extensive review for it in about 6 or more months. I'm sure you could submit it to major airsoft sites like airsoftretreat, arnies, and airsoft core. It would be very helpful especially since most reviews I come across of just about any gun is an out of the box review.
Points well taken, and yes, I will leave it stock for as long as it will last stock.
For the most part, I have noticed that it is a pretty deacent gun and will fire still, even though I landed pretty hard on it when Black_Kade and I tried to get to the first crash site at BHD. It still works just as fine as it used to, only thing is the barrel is a bit dirty and causing erratic shots (i think thats due to the barrel being dirty, may be wrong though).
The claw mount that comes with the gun, as some may have read in other reviews, does have a problem where it tilts to one side. This is very easily fixed with a little bit of minor adjusting of the hex screws that are on the claw mount. Now my my reddot site (cheap-o immation from gary that still allows the gun to look bad-as$) on the gun is perfectly straight and even w/ the gun. You just have to sit and tinker with things for a little bit before you get a true feel for how you like it, but that goes accordingly for every gun that you have.
Another thing that I have noticed is that the mag well is missing a pin that holds the body together a little bit tigher there. The pin holes are there, but there is no pin. I did not take it apart before the game at all so maybe it just doesn't come with one.
-The problem with this is, the mag well is more infulenced to "flex" a bit so that the larger diameter (if thats the right word to use) mags like the Star magazines, will not fit unless the mag well is held shut competely. This is easily remedied on the gun by a little bit of supre glue (not recomended IMO because taking the gun down again will be a little bit difficult) or by use of a zip tie around the mag well, or by getting the pin that is suppose to go there.
I know a picture or two was requested, so I took what I could get and this is it. I will take ones later on when I have some better lighting but this is what I have for now.

If there is a specific picture that you think I can take and you would like to see it for comparison purposes to a TM Mp5, I will try my best to suit your needs if you would like.

here's another extensive breakdown of the UTG MP5 by a guy in the forums at Arnies Airsoft: http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=30898&hl= (i didn't read the thread though). there's also a couple user submitted reviews of the gun (http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/reviewpost/showproduct.php/product/156/sort/2/cat/16/page/1) on Arnies in their Review Database (http://www.arniesairsoft.co.uk/reviewpost/) section (only one of the reviews is worth anything though; the other is crap).
