You can be pretty much as casual as you want, if you're starting your own. Some teams are pretty Mil-Simy, and so have ranks and such designations. I beleive Task Force Delta, Wolf Recon, and Echo Squadron all indulge in that to some degree. (Correct me if I'm wrong) So presumably you would be assigned a position if you were to join such a team, but you don't need to do anything like that if you have your own. All you need to have is someone in charge. I know RIOT doesn't have ranks, for example.

i know i just want it to be organized and know what the right names for everything would be for a team.
krayzie, its really up to you and your teammates on what you want. Tiger Recon doesn't have any structure to it other than a few postions (Commandar, Trainer, Facilitator, and Ambassador) these are just there to make sure we have some sort of organization and keep moving in the right direction on and off the field. On the field we have no rank nor do we order each other around. Its just how we work. So its really up to you, if you want rank in your team then follow what the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy or even the Coast Gaurd (am I missing any of the armed forces?) does. Or just make it up... again its up to you!

My team uses NRA positions. Since I started it, my rank is: Charlton Heston :D
Yep, TomE's right (again). It's personal preference all the way. If you're going to take rank seriously though, try not to do anything weird, like having Private as a higher rank that Leieuotenant, or however you spell it. Good luck, but you really don't need all that much.
If you mean positions outside of rank (e.g.: assault, heavy weapons, whatever else, and, of course, sniper), then just get estimates for fps, rof, range, and mag capacity, and make the logical decisions.

If you are going to use the ranks of the military, please dont use the patches associated with those ranks.
There is a taboo with many of the people that play this, and that is not to use the real ranks or real patches of the military. UNLESS you actually earned them.
It is a split field, and there are always exceptions. But, the ones that disapprove look on it as an insult to assign yourself to a rank that is not earned, while real people are in the military for decades to achieve the same rank.
The other side looks at it as you are trying to emulate a real unit, so rank should be in it and that you are honoring the individuals that do this for a living, by trying to be like them.
There are others, like re-enactors that are the exception. They are trying to re-enact a specific unit and therefore are trying to look exactly like it.
There is a further division. Those that are in the real military and look on what we do as a pansy game and would just a quickly kick out our teeth then have you wear a rank and insignia of a unit that they served in.
So, take it like you wish, but everyone is different on this subject.
