View Full Version : Where do "Handles" come from?

Keith

I'm really curious, and have not been able to get a straight answer, as to where "Handles" (e.g., "Ghostbear" and "wolfram" and "Night Stalker") come from.

It seems that one school of thought is that you don't give yourself a handle, that others give it to you. But there also seem to be plenty of players who just pic names that they like or resonate well with.

What are people's thoughts and advice for new airsoft players?

Vigilante
05 Sep 06, 01:59 PM
Well, one of the members of ice, his name is Alex, he has the callsign of Crash now. I forget how, as I have severe ADD.

Back in the day I used to play alot of games, and somehow, I ended up being Vigilante. That is what my old clan started to call me, and well, I liked it, and then I found out the meaning of it, and I was like, might as well keep it. Alot of my friends and teachers called me Vig as well. There is another nickname, but I am not going to say it.

A "handle" or nickname, IMO, is something that you earn, rather than make up. I have had the name Ronin for a number of years, since I played soccer in high school. (The story is long and rather boring)
The problem with giving yourself a name is that you always think of the coolest thing possible, even though you may not deserve having a cool name.

Night Stalker
05 Sep 06, 04:03 PM
You can name yourself if you don't have one, or have been given one. Or you can use one that someone gave you. It can be funny, cool, tough, etc..

Just stay away from cheezy movie names that are lame to start with..
i.e. Neo, Matrix, etc.... things like that.

Wait to be given a handle, don't make one up yourself.
I've had Maple since i was 9 years old. The story revolves around me, a maple tree and unconsciousness.
If you name yourself, it doesn't have any real meaning behind it, just something cool you thought of on your own.

People call me Haagasus because my last name is Haag and a friend thought it sounded like pegasus. So, haagasus=pegasus.

I should be Major Volleyball Net then! Hmmm...we should start a team or something.

Anyway, I gave myself my handle after Josephthelord (my usual handle) turned out to be a little cumbersome, so I switched to this. If I had known that Agent was already taken, I wouldn't have chosen Agent J, though. My name's Joseph, so Agent J works out OK.
I've only gotten 2 nicknames in real life, Ganymede and Webster, neither of which have stuck very well. Plus I'm not particularly proud of getting the nickname of Zeus' mythological gay lover, and being named for providing good definitons in class isn't that great either.
My "cool" nicknames usually aren't that great, but they work out well enough.

Oh yeah, my last name's Dobbs, so some teachers would call me Dobber, and my old basketball coach called me Dobberino. Why didn't I think of that before. Oh well, next time the boards get shut down because of that propane trash-talking I'll switch (maybe).

My call sign is very simple... I wanted a unique online name 4 year agos and JediBGP is it... why ;) ...

Jedi = I'm one and that like any "MC" or "DJ" you need to tell the people what you are. :]

BGP = It was my nickname I gave myself back in 1999 because the rest suck....

Benny
Big B (A pimp name given to me by my Latino brother gave me in High School)
Benniedia
Big Ben
Bengie
Beng
Benzino (Given to me from a former co-worker in 2004)

Also I was writing a book with me in it and Ben didn't strike fear in the heart of evil but... BGP does. :) What does it mean????... next to it's my initials....

B= Behemoth

G= Great

P= Power!!!

Are you talking about Donnie Darko ? lol Cause thats an awsome Easter Bunny, one who wants your soul.

Mine came from Mr. Freeze since I liked him in the original Batman comics, since he stole for something real, not really to get rich but to try and save his wife. As well no one has given me a nickname other then Big John.

Neways, I got mine from a game we use to play a long time ago, kind like cops and robbers but we really got into ours. We were thinking of retarded things that never went together and my friend said a stealthy turkey... I though that a stealthy turkey would be morking sweet, thus Stelthturkey was born (not 'stealth', I took that out becuase most user profile wont let the name be that long).

I run around every night, creaping in the shaddows, to arrest bad-guys, while driving a suped-up car with nifty lights & computers & I wear a utility belt covered with "wonderfull toys" - so in otherwords, I'm Batman.

Pluss I have a 10 inch Tattoo of Batman on my shin, so that kinda did it.

One of the first multi-player computer games I got into was Decent. I just hada knack for taking advantage of the 3 dimensional playing field, and one guy blurted out, "Da---it dude, I wish you'd quit that 'Downsliding-thing!" So it kinda stuck. Its been my callsign/ handle on any mutliplayer games and pretty much any forums.

Descent was a sweet game. Descent 2 came with my PowerMac and I couldn't tell you how many hours I spent playing that game and XWing: COllector's Edition.

My name has stuck for a long time. When I first started gaming online, I took the name Billy Bob West Texas. My regs in Unreal Tournament and Rogue Spear just started calling me Tex. Eventually I dropped the "Billy Bob" part and just went by Tex.

When I got to the airsoft scene, I kept the "Tex" handle as it was easier than having to come up with another lame handle.

Raven218
06 Sep 06, 02:33 PM
My handle (callsign w\e u wanna call it) was given to me way back in the day of Counter Strike 1.5. I was usually a CT so i was shooting a M4A1 (duh to any cs player) and in my clan people knew how i played, as in i go in silenced and i usually snap shoot or camp. So my clan leader gave me the name Raven because i striked fast and accurate in CS (dosnt really apply into airsoft but Raven stuck so i use it today)

I've not really had any good (or bad) nicknames throughout the years, so I just picked one for myself. It was either that or "chickenwithouthead"....maybe I should have went with the latter?

If I ever "earn" a new/better handle though, I wouldn't be opposed to changing it. Hell, maybe I'll change it just for sh**s and giggles. Much easier than changing your real name. ;)

Now that I think about it though, there was a guy in high school who called me "nutsack"....

I dont have a story behind my handle, I just use it because about 9years ago when I started doing things on the internet it sounded cool. 9 years later and me having it as a username on 12 different forums, every retailer iv ever ordered from, my E-mail, paypal and anything else I use except AIM, it umm is getting pretty OLD....

Though with my other nicknames of the day u can see why I didnt really choose to use them (Cheeseballs / HornyToad).....

I cant think of any others iv had except maybe Dumbass.... If I ever change it will prolly be to ToastMonster since thats been my avatar forever....

Iron Will
07 Feb 07, 08:02 AM
Mine started as a nickname for myself (for profiles on videogames, forums, etc.). I was good enough at Halo that the guys I played with called me Iron Will instead of my real name, and the rest is history. So I guess you could say I "earned" it, just not by playing airsoft.

I dont know why you guys have handles on the field. I mean what are we fly boys? We dont fly jets and we are simming ground pounders if not operators. So yeah good old last name or first name. The only reason why the military uses radio call signs is to designate who is talking and what unit they are from. For example my call sign was Scorpion 2 Eagle. Scorpion was platoon, 2 was my squad, and Eagle was the designation for the snipers. That was if I was talking on company net. If I went on command net it would be Bushmaster 3-2 Eagle. So Bushmaster was my company, 3 was third platoon, 2 squad, Eagle for sniper. If we where on a squad net we just used each others last names or called each other names that i will not use on this board.

Logs is easy, tiny logs in mysterious places? Did that have something to do with the "Faces in Mysterious places" thing? I dont remember.......

Oh, the Other nickname I had for a while in highschool was "Jack" because people thought I looked and sounded like Jack from Will and Grace, random people I didnt know would be like "OMG ur just like jack from will and Grace" Of couse id ignore them but in my head I was thinking "Yeah **** u too Asshole...."

Nowadays I dont really care as much as I did then but like Logs or Jack are more "Honest" Handles, even if they arent something to be proud of, if they are funny and u embrace them and become part of the joke, the name wont follow u around and devour your Spirit. Defender 1
08 Feb 07, 06:04 AM
My actual radio callsign was Badger when I was deployed, but I thought it would be kind of pretentious to claim that here, So I go with Defender as it related to my unit, Security Forces. It motto was "Defensor Fortis" Defenders of the Force.

Where do "Handles" come from?
Well, when a mommy handle and a daddy handle love each other very, very much...

Ok, seriously, I needed to come up with an online name and just threw some syllables together. At the time I was reading a lot of Tolkien, so that probably influenced the overall sound of the name.
A lot of people have trouble pronouncing it just be looking at it, so most people just call me 'Val.' Of course, that frequently gets turned into Valerie, Valkarye, Valentine, Val Kilmer, and anything else cute that they come up with.

Actually, I'm a little surprised by the use of that translation. "Fors, fortis" is more commonly translated as "strength," and "Defenders of the Force" sounds a little off (to my ears at least). Huh. No accounting for translation, eh? ;)

I don't mean any offense to anyone here, but my personal take on the matter is call-signs are not chosen, they are granted or given. My friends and I have a few rules about call-signs:

A - You don't choose your own. It's not up to you to find a nickname for yourself. If that were the case, then it's not really a "nickname" in the spirit of the definition.
B - Any call-sign offered to you must not be offensive or degrading to you or anyone else.
C - You may veto a call-sign that is offered to you. However, you must at least consider it before doing so.
D - You may offer suggestions on a call-sign but there's no guarantee that you will be christened with any of them.
E - If you have a pre-existing call-sign given to you by another group, friend, family member, or clan, you may use that only if it's accepted by your group.
F - Your call-sign will be offered to you when the time is right. It may take as little as a day for people to come up with and agree on one, or it may takes months and months of being around the people and familiarizing with each other.

It may seem silly to have such rules, but it prevents groups from having 5 people named 5|_|p3r-5n1p3r, Deathlord, or crap like that.

Well, part of that is also because there are a lot of young people whom I regularly play with, and we don't want 6 "Master Chief"'s and 4 "Darth Maul"'s.
Also, because of their age, 11-17, we don't want to see kids taking offensive names just for shock value.
The last thing we want is to call some 15 year old kid "Teabagger" in front of his mom because that was the name he chose.

Ghostbear
25 Sep 07, 06:44 AM
GK,

It is soooo much more rewarding to explain to the kids mom that that is what HE chose as a name for himself. And that you didnt really know what it was until you got home and Wiki'd the term. But, if your son wants to be called that, who am I to disagree.

That just is sooooo much more rewarding.

I like the rules he had.I wish I got a name that I didnt have to make up,to bad I never got a nickname from any friends. If you play alot of free mmorpg's one the interenet theres a over abundence of people with a nickname from a video game or a movie.I think it's stupid have a nickname thats pretty much a different full name. For example,i'm Tim Carson,i'd rather be called Tim Carson than walk around with people saying "hey Sam Fisher" or "sup Master Cheif".

I think a nickname should actually be something that really describes the person.Like im good at sleeping,a name like bum or hobo would suite me.

Its got way to much hype.I mean the first game was awesome, the second one sucked. And because of that im not gonna bother with #3.I think the newest commercial for halo 3 was pretty cool though.

Back to the topic though,it's like I walk around school tellin people to call me lone soldier. They call me by name, and every so often I get called dogbar.Thats a long story though.
Also:If your not sure who sam fisher is,he's from splinter cell, another awesome series.

Totally agree with you man, TOTALLY!

I walk around work with people calling me A-Ron, get the occasional hot shot who thinks its cool to call me A-Rod yeah, Packers suck for me too, lol[/SIZE]).
Other than that I get called a#shole all the time. Unfortunately, I think having that as my handle might offend some.

Hey, give it time.:)

The more you play regularly with people, the faster it will happen... typically.
You can always let people know you're looking for a call-sign too. That will jump-start the process.

Since "handles" seem to be such a big identifier of who you are, I think I am going to change mine to: MyP3n1sT1ckl3sYourG1rlFr13nd1nH3rB3h1nd
I'd tell you to stay away from my girlfriend, but let's face it... I'm, uh... chicks don't, uh, they don't dig me.

Maybe I never got a nickname at school because not many people like me.Probaly because I have a reputation as a con man.

Actually, I was joking... but I have been single for a loooooong time.

So you're known for being a "con man?"
As in you "served time" con man? As in you're a "swindler?" Help me out.
You know, we could call you "King Con."

hahaha,no I haven't done time.In con man I mean I sell things in school(not drugs if your wondering)and I pretty much cheat people out of some money.I got to get money for that m4 somehow, and i'm not working in fast food.It aint for me.I also do a little bit of "extortion" if you want to call it that, but it isnt exactlly illegal like godfather or goodfellas mobster type extortion. But thats probaly one reason the chicks dont dig me...

But bringing up king con,one name someone called me once was king cool, but thats not really something everyone would be cool with calling me that because,im not cool all the time;) .

EDIT:By the way,if I were to trade anyone here don't worry.I'm only a liar and a cheat to people at my school.
