View Full Version : Operation: Shahikot - Sunday March 26th

Professor
09 Mar 06, 08:53 AM
Operation: SHAHIKOT

This event is dedicated to the memory of Neil Roberts, US Navy SEAL, who gave the ultimate sacrifice on a mountain in Afghanistan and to all those other “operators” who also gave on behalf of our freedom. So many of them do so in locations and in actions of which we may never know. Let it be known that we appreciate it!

Tasking Order:
At 0530hrs on March 2nd 2002 three CH53s left Baghram Airbase Afghanistan carrying elements of the 10th Mountain Division and the 101st Airborne. Several hours earlier elements of the US Special Forces combined with Afghanistan Militia left their base in a vehicle column of Toyota pickups and Afghani Jenga trucks. They drove off in the early morning hours in a direction away from their intended area of operation knowing their movement would be broadcast by enemy observers and would create a distraction and misdirection. They would move to the north and at a predetermined waypoint would turn west then south to the area of operation. The plan was to perform a “pinching movement” on Taliban and Al Qaeda forces in the Shahikot Valley.

Intelligence had determined that they would encounter a small number of enemy forces, approximately 100-200, in the valley. The intelligence was wrong. The enemy forces were much stronger and they were occupying positions in the mountains overlooking the valley. Along the way, the SF and Afghani forces column was mistaken for enemy movement and attacked by a AC130 SPECTRE Gunship wounding many, killing some and destroying vehicles. This was a premonition of the battle to come. The battle began after the helicopters dropped off the regular Army forces and lasted more than 18 hours…

Will Gary's temporary safety run-through be sufficient? or AEC only?

Brigdh
09 Mar 06, 01:38 PM
Not an offical reply, but lately Gary's run through has been sufficent until another AEC can be run, but dont quote me on this

Professor
09 Mar 06, 02:23 PM
Gary's safety briefing is accepted as an interium for an official WAA AEC but not a permanant substitution.

RTO
09 Mar 06, 03:13 PM
Sounds like another game that I'm loving. Errors and mistakes and the massive swarms of BHD haunt me still, and from the reading, thats what it kind of sounds like, lol.

One questoin. I'm not clear on what your defination of "digital bdu" is, so ACU and the Marine Digital and the other one (if i'm thinking correctly) are they being categorized as "digital" all in one or just a certain kind of the new camo being considered digital?

Professor
10 Mar 06, 01:09 AM
Yeah RTO..."digital camo" is a loose term accepting any digital pattern Army, Marine, etc US bdus. Might even accept multipat... :]

And, btw, think of being dropped off in the field and find yourself being surrounded by enemy all around you in the woods...you can try to break out and take the battle to the enemy or hold tight and just try to survive til the darkness comes because they're not bring choppers back into the LZ cuz it's way too hot!

This event was designed from the events of the opening of OP: Anacanda...and it sounds way too close to the situation depicted in the movie "We were soldiers..." and...does Custer come to mind as well?

RTO
10 Mar 06, 03:02 AM
ha ha ha.. reguraless, another great game planned by you professor, it is sure to be good!

RTO...you're too kind 'ole chap.

10 Mar 06, 11:22 AM
I have to agree with RTO. This should be good.

I am unsure of one thing. Are all of the US forces together, or is there seperate groups? 10th Mountain, and 101st Airborne in one, and Special Forces and Afgan Militia in another?

Kenuchfleck
10 Mar 06, 04:34 PM

Hey Vig...what's an MC?

Kneuch...great to hear tha "Horses" will be coming we'll make a spot fer ya ole chap!

Spraynpray...thanks fro your flexibility....depending on the "showing" I may have to move people around. Bring yer friends on!

Professor
14 Mar 06, 05:10 AM
Jackal -
Actually this is the opening of Operation:Ananaconda and not the "Battle for Roberts Ridge"....even though the event is dedicated in his specific name. However, keep in mind the dedication is more in memory of all those "unknown operators" who have and will fight in battles and locations we may never of on behalf of our freedom.

Razor -
I was counting on you...thanks! Now, who's with him?

Ill take 10th Mt. or US Spec. Ops.

Prof, I saw a program about it on the Military Channel (Best channel ever....nest to maybe the Playboy channel ;) ) anyways, it was called Operation Annaconda: The Battle of Roberts Ridge. I guess that's waht they are calling that battle in memory of him.

Fish
15 Mar 06, 10:47 PM
I will gladly help balance things out on taliban unless Echo had a different plan prof.

Professor
16 Mar 06, 05:32 AM
Jackal - gotta admit I'm a Military Channel junkie too! Yes, the OP: Anaconda remake done there was pretty good but focused on Takur Ghar (Roberts Ridge) specifically. This event is planned around the opening of OP: Anaconda and not about Takur Ghar. That was just one sad incident in the entire operation. .....I'll put you w/ 10th Mtn.

Fish - thanks you...yes I'd appreciate it if Echoians played bad guys but if they choose to wear DPM then I'll hookem up with the US SF team.

Professor
16 Mar 06, 05:41 AM
FYI -

The event will be broken into two sections with the second being defined by the results of the first -

The first will be from approx 10:00am up to lunch / 12:30pm

The second will be from approx after lunch / 1:30pm til 3:30-4:00pm

Lunch will last NO longer than 1 hr. Please get yerselves fed and re-geared in that time. Plan accordingly.

I'm allowed to play.. I'll come :D

Professor
20 Mar 06, 01:36 AM
Gruzniak - I'll put you and your Dad on either 10th Mtn or the 101st.

Scratchy - contact Gary at The War Game Room and he'll coordinate for you to attend his safety training early before the game. If you wear woodland I'll put you on the 101st.

The Col was correct, but I didn't forget...I just figured Gary had said it enough times.

NewMP5 - we'll figure out a spot for them, but unless there is snow on the ground Urban will stand out a bit. Might want them to dress in civies that blend in a bit and have them be either Afghani Militia or Taliban. Otherwise, we'll figure out something,

I will be at the field at or before 830am. Anyone needing the safety briefing be there at 830am so you can get it in so you can get ready for the game. The Safety briefing will take up to 30 minutes.
If you need the briefing let me know so I know how many to plan for.

I'm wondering outloud here, but since the SF is amost all Ponies except for one other very welcomed individual:) I plan on being the CO of that group. Is there anyone else in the 10th Mountain or 101st that would like to be known as the go to guy for each respective unit?

My last experience in Afghanistan was dreadful, (Takur Ghar). The US teams were all over the place and didn't coordinate a single effort and thusly got ripped to shreds all day long, (except for the pilot rescue of course which we just barley pulled off:)

Any thoughts, feedback?

By the way, I'm making a map of the Wargame Room with a grid on it for each unit CO . The grid map will make unit movement, position, rally points and the likes soo much easier, well, it would be alot easier if the Taliban went home too:)

Professor
22 Mar 06, 02:21 PM
The US forces will be provided further battle plans at the event and what will represent "last minute" Intel updates. The strategy is for the 10th and the 101st to set up a blocking position into which the SF forces will drive the enemy forces.

The "last minute" Intel will be providing updated numbers and locations of the enemy positions and may cause the US forces to alter their original landing zones/insertion points and location of the blocking positions.

So, as Kneuch has so deftly identified, it would be wise for the US players to begin coordinating a chain of command and communications procedures. It will be imperative that you operate as a team to successfully accomplish the planned incursion.

Now, the enemy forces will be given "advantages" that will enable them to emulate a "large force" by providing them a generous regeneration process. As well, we all know how good battlefield intel goes so the accuracy of the US information may be questionable.

Good luck gentlemen...you'll need it.

Yes Jackal I guess you could just use one, but I was thinking I don't want or need to hear 10th M and 101st radio squak any more than you want or need to hear the SF guys. Also, my walkie is tucked away in a molle pouch on my back and is inaccessible unless I take my entire rig off! So for me it would be better to have my unit's walkie (the one on my back which is a throat mic/earbud) and another seperate walkie mounted frontside where I can just pick it up and talk directly to you:)

Look at it like you have a radio man following in your footsteps who is always dialed into headquarters, just like in the Nam movies, only I hope you don't get your arm blown off just like every other vietnam war movie radio man!!

Jackal, yes you could, but it is sometimes a bear to switch channels, especially in a fire fight. I often carry two radio's, one on team channel and the other for radioing OCs if need be. I would reccomend running two for the day, so you don't have to switch channels constantly.

Just because I'm a new face to airsoft in WI doesn't mean I would be an incompotent leader. I don't have a problem with somebody else doing it, I just would like to. Vig, If you don't like the idea, I don't have a problem with that either. But I think Kenuchfleck is right; it would be better, and probably more fun, if the squads were a little more organized before we step on the field on Sunday.

Yes Jackal should kindly pm all mates on 10th and see in they're coo with him as unit CO and if they're not he should thank everybody for considering him and back out. OP:SHAHIKOT Regeneration and Hit Rules

Everyone prepare yourself for a change from the norm regarding regeneration and hit rules for this event.

In the attempt to increase the “realism” I am going to be implementing some new regen/medic and hit rules for this event.

We will be using limited regeneration and medic rules to cause you, the player, to change the mode of your play to more directly reflect a feeling of “you only have one life and a single shot will take it – no regens exist in real life” and to minimize the occurrence of players running headlong into a hailstorm of BBs because they know they just regen shortly anyway.

Unlike other events where a player is granted numerous regens/medic lives, it is possible with these limited “life rules” that you may either sit out for a while until re-entering the battle or until the beginning of the second event after lunch depending when your “lives” are expended. Please approach this with an open mind and alter the manner you play this event to better “stay alive”.

Additionally, I will implement in this event a modified hit rule. A player will be “wounded” if they take a hit to a leg or arm and that extremity will be unusable until being medicated or regenerated. If a player takes a hit to the body or torso it will be considered a “kill shot”. Honor will be expected for this as with any other hit. Remember “When in doubt, call yourself out!”

These modified rules are an experiment I hope will come out successfully and eventually be utilized in other future events. The success of this experiment highly depends on you, the player, approaching them with an open mind and making adjustments to your style of play to accommodate them. I greatly appreciate your cooperation.

The specifics as to the number of regens and the process of doing so will be provided at the event.

STAY LOW AND MOVE SLOW!!!

The idea of added realism and "wounds" vs. regeneration sounds great. Hopefully it will make people think before they act, taking the skirmishes yet another step farther away from "paintsoft."

As it turns out, reality has once again reared its ugly head in my life. I will have to withdrawl from Sunday, which pisses me off because it sounds like it is going to be an awesome game, Prof. my buddy called last night and his wife was pissed, because he's working 6 12 hour days this week (he's a car dealer) and so he figured discretion is the better part of valor, so he ducked on me. And as my move gets closer, stuff has come up that has prevented me from properly prepping for it during the week, so I may not be finished by Sunday.

Professor, In regards to the new hit/regen rule, if you shoot at someone and hit them in the arm or leg (non-lethal) should you just keep moving along or keep shooting for the kill. Because if you hit them and they start calling for a medic I dont think peole would appreciate it if you kept shooting at them, but Im not sure.

Also, do two arm/leg hits count as a kill?

If they are actually killed, then they should put their kill rag on. If it is just a leg/arm hit, then there should be no kill rag.

I posted this earlier, but because I can't edit the original it got lost in the clutter -

This is a two part event.

From the start till approx 12 noon and then the second part from approx 1 to 3 or 4pm approx.

Try to take whatever you need during each part onto the field as if you were US being inserted into the battlefield or as if you were bad guys and were temporarily living there...

Professor
24 Mar 06, 01:42 AM
Roadkill - there are a couple of approaches to your question. So, here goes -

1) If you hit someone in the arm or leg they are wounded and may use the other to shoot back. IN that case they are saying you can shoot them back and kill them with a torso shot.

2) If they fall down or stop and begin shouting for a medic you could a) keep shooting them till they are dead and can't call for a medic or b) you could stake them out and wait for them medic to come and try rescue them so you could get them too.

BTW, the "wounded" person can limp if hit in leg or shoot with other arm if hit with arm and can shout for medic. Dead people are dead and cannot call for medic, cannot talk in any fashion. They can wait where they are for the possibility of being medicated if the have medic rules or if they do not they will walk back to appropriate regen point.

Further details provided at event.

To my Team:
If it weren't for dedicated CO's and some really talented and smart playing by US operators and troops the day had the potential to be a total route! But the men in the 10 Mountain, 101st, and Special Forces fought with vigor and determination, every man who left that field Sunday had something to be proud of. I'd like to say "You guys rock!" to the Special Forces; Foochild, Jimmy, Jeff, Headshot (Kopfschuss), Skullman, Skull Jr., and Dusty (Seppuku), thank you for contributing to the team effort heart and soul!
Also a huge thanks to Ranger and Blitz for effective and most importantly fun leadership! Big thanks to Professor for doing the homework and crafting the scenarios into a very unique and interesting Op!

To our Enemies:
You still prove to be deadly and elusive combatants making every yard gained and held a pure pain in the butt! You've had quite a streak of victories, Black Hawk Down, Takur Ghar, and Shahikot. But your luck will change. The American's will be able to drop troops unharrassed via choppers into LZ's scattered around the field in battles to come(Thanks professor :) ). We will eventually figure out artillery strikes that can decimate and entire grid location killing all within (once every 15 minutes). We will also eventually have Apache gunship support allowing for 5 minutes of uncontested and unmolested air support (once every half an hour). These changes may at first be upsetting and possibly denounced as "unfair" but you will adapt and respect the firepower the US brings to the table when it goes to war. So savor these victories because these happy days are sure to end!! :)

In closing, awesome job to everyone we'll see you next time,

Actually, Kenuch's idea of artillery could be done pretty easily. You just grid out the field map, plop an OC into the grid to be shelled, and radio that OC when it takes place. The OC then relates to anyone in that area that they have been hit, and need to regen.
It may need a little fine tuning, but I think it would work great.

Kenuchfleck
27 Mar 06, 02:16 PM
Even if the OC had to move from one grid location to the next that could emulate the time delay between calling the strike and it actually being delivered. I personally love this idea!

I like the idea as well. but just like in a real strike there are surivers and miss hits in the shelling

Kenuchfleck
27 Mar 06, 02:28 PM
That's the beauty of it, it would be totally up to the OC, he could spare one man in a trench while the other is dead, he could say the shelter you were in suffered a direct hit and everyone inside is dead, if the team who called the strike had camrades on the border of the grid location they might even suffer casualties themsleves... So on and so forth

NATHANIELJONESTHUGANGEL
27 Mar 06, 02:40 PM
I really do like this idea. If it's gonna be up to the OC as to who dies, than this would have no place in a "1 shot, 1 kill, no respawn" game like the 2nd half of yesterday was...just pointing out the obvious.

Kenuchfleck
27 Mar 06, 02:52 PM
Gruz, yes absolutly, you wouldn't use this is the "one hit and you're out" portion of any game. I actually intended this artillery thing to help any team tasked with assualting thin out dug in defenders to help the pace of the game. Also, so that the assaulting team wouldn't need the 3-1 numerical odds historians would say is necessary for successful assaults (I tend to agree). It might also help put the fear of God into someone to get moving who just wants to sit in a building all day and be impervious to everything..
